Youth for Climate is a climate youth movement that seeks to limit the consequences of the climate and biodiversity crisis. For this, we believe that an immediate system change is absolutely necessary! Therefore, we protest, sensibilize youth and organize ourselves as activists. As a movement, we believe that it is highly important to share the same values in order to reach these goals. To limit global warming properly and create system change, we believe that a better world for everyone should be created, in which these values are incorporated.
Climate Justice = Social Justice
The climate crisis does not check addresses. Everyone will be affected by it sooner or later. Unfortunately the Global South has been facing the effects of climate change for already way too long. We as privileged western countries are already seeing the first impacts of what is yet to come.
After many calls for action, a lot of a lot of people are still ignorant and have not been provided with enough information regarding the environmental crisis. Therefore, we as Youth for Climate made it our mission to spread awareness about this global issue as well as everything and everyone connected to it.
We acknowledge that there are less privileged minority groups. They are a victim of inequality and structural discrimination. These inequalities and injustices will be amplified by climate change. It’s important that we acknowledge this, that we stand with everyone facing inequalities and that we show our solidarity. Besides this, we - as a climate movement - should focus on intersectionality. You cannot fight for climate justice without fighting for social justice.
To work towards a sustainable future, we need a socially just transition with enough support for workers and employees. Sufficient funding for companies to make this transition possible is necessary. Therefore, as an environmental movement, we urge the companies and our government to act and think sustainable, so that in order to leave no one behind, the transition must be carefully and fairly managed.
We as Youth for Climate find it important that everyone is treated equally despite their differences. Everyone must have the same rights and opportunities. We should abandon discrimination when taking action and progressively end existing inequalities. We must create an environment that meets everyone’s basic needs, furthermore acknowledges and respects their personal needs to create a safe space for everyone.
We also want to make sure that everyone feels safe daily and during our actions, to realize this we must condemn all kinds of violence. This means that we’re non-violent towards property and all living beings, during our actions we aren’t damaging or harming either of them. This means that our actions will always be peaceful.
Everyone must be valued, recognized and be respected. Treating people in a positive manner that acknowledges them for who they are and what they do should be our first priority as individuals; regardless of their gender identity, skin complexion, sexuality, religion…
This complements that no one should judge or be judged by one another, meaning that everyone should be able to express themselves without being criticized.
We should not focus on our differences, instead we should focus on the things we have in common and build a stronger foundation.
To reach objectives, it is important to work together and organize ourselves. Together we stand strong. To do so, we need to be connected, respect differences in opinions and personalities, and above all else trust each other.
We as Youth for Climate also want to end animal suffering that is the direct result of bio-industry and other human activities.
Unite behind Science
In the new world we envision, science will contribute to a sustainable economy, green transport and a net CO2 neutral world with no abuse of earth resources. For a sustainable economy, we mean an economy that positively impacts the climate and environment, people’s wellbeing, cultural diversity and ecological footprint. For green transport, we envision a kind of transport system that has no negative effect on the environment.
The current usage of fossil fuels pose a great threat to the environment and our own health. Therefore, we must immediately end the use of fossil fuels and create a society that is independent from it.
System Change, not Climate Change
To reach and sustain a world that incorporates our values, radical change is necessary. To accomplish this change, we need to believe that our world is becoming a better place after taking action and achieving a system change that warrants our values. Therefore, we need to reinvent our democracies, so that citizens are included in the decisions about their future. Participation is an absolute must. This way, a fair future - in which having affordable access to education that includes the mentioned values - is a basic right and it is a future wherein people work and live solution-oriented.
On top, decolonization is an absolute priority. Peoples’ suffering should be recognized, and we must end the exploitation of people and raw materials. In our ideal world, we give countries and their inhabitants autonomy, and we respect their rights. We step back from our current paternalistic attitude and value other cultures and world views.
